$20 St. Gauden piece
1 Attachment(s)
Looking for some advice, as I've never delved into numismatics before. I may be able to buy a 1914 US $20 St. Gauden coin, in a capsule, graded by PCGS at AU58. Looking at PCGS website, it states that this coin is worth around $1300. I can pick this up for spot. Are the values stated by PCGS accurate? Could I actually sell this coin for what they suggest? I've been reading PCGS guide to grading and it seems extremely far from a reliable way of looking at coins:

Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
since that coin has .9675 oz of gold in it do you mean you are buying it for spot price of $877.80 or melt price of $850?
either price is great. take it. dont expect to get the $1300 list price though...probably more like $1000 |
Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
j-son, thanks for the quick reply. i thought it was 1 troy ounce, so thanks for that heads up.
spot price in nok is 4,975. coin selling for 5,200, worth 4,813 for its gold content. selling for about 8% over its AGW value. if i were to sell it on ebay.com, with fees, i wonder if i'd end up making any profit. |
Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
why not list it for a one day auction and see if it sells above your cost...then you can buy it.

Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
I'd buy it for spot!
The grade is not good enough to pay much more then that. I bet ebay would fetch more then you paid. What are you waiting for?...fan out the cash and throw it in the box. U.S. $20 GOLD: 33.46grams .900fine gold .96750oz actual contained gold The total population of these coins that is certified is very low: consider that out of a total mintage of 1,498,000 for the 1914-S Saint Gaudens, only 7,895 are graded MS-64 and only 2,355 are graded MS-65. |
Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
sounds like you've done this before
thanks for the advice. |

That specific coin is probably graded correctly. Period. I always think a nice PCGS or NGC AU58 is a USUALLY great way to get a nice looking Saint. AU 58 PCGS retail plus "around" $1,350 Should bring "around" wholesale plus around $1,100 in auction. Coins are rising now in advance of the gold rise - first time I've seen this. |
Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
I`d buy it in a heartbeat at the price you can get it for.

Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
seller hasn't replied to my email yet, so i don't know what's going on. if it is still for sale, price is $920. if i can flog it for "around" $1100, worth the time.

Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
$1100???
Wow! |
Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
I'd buy it for spot and worry later about resale value!

Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
If you can get a Saint for spot, good deal.
If you can get a Saint for the 1-oz spot price (even though you are only getting .9675 oz of metal), still a decent deal, if you like the coin and the history. But an AU Saint is not selling for $1100 or $1300, no way, no how (unless it's a rare year... or some idiot on eBay, you never know what they might do, they could buy my belly button lint for $1300 for all I know). Even MS-61 Saints sell for very very little over spot price. Dealers probably buy them back around spot. |
Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
Be VERY careful it's not counterfeit, and I'm hearing that there are a lot of counterfeit slabs showing up.

Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
never received a reply from the seller. at least a small education in what MS60 or AU 56 means.

http://coins.about.com/od/coingradin...grading101.htm You will also see grades of PF60-PF70 instead of MS60-MS70. This is only for PROOF coins. No need for further explanation, that link should get you started. Ask any other specific questions here and someone should answer it. |
Re: $20 St. Gauden piece
First post here, and somewhat new to PM's......in my humble opinion, if you can get it for spot, BUY IT...PERIOD, in fact, unless my rationale is wrong, I'd buy almost Anything at spot, one of you long-termers here correct me if I'm wrong.....
